Sacramento

Del Paso Blvd

Blue Line

The Sacramento Blue Line opened in 1987, making it one of the older lines in the country. The line travels on Del Paso Blvd for 6 blocks.  What is unique about the design of the line is that the light rail tracks share a drive lane with cars.   This allows for on-street parking to be perserved in front of the small businesses on the street.  Traffic counts from the around the time the line was constructed to the present show that there was never an significant fluxes in traffic as a result of this design.  Important design elements to note is the distance between the westbound and eastbound light rail tracks varies to accomodate turn lanes, stations, and other features and amenities, as well as the shared right-of-way of trains and cars
