San Francisco

Third Street

MUNI T Third Street Line

The San Francisco T Third Street line opened in 2007. It runs down the middle of Third Street which was formerly a six-lane arterial that fed downtown. Now, Third Street is comprised of two lanes of traffic with on-street parking along commerical districts of the line. On the upper stretch of the line, the light rail tracks occupy their own right-of- way. On the lower section, the light rail shares drive lanes with cars. This configuration allows for on-street parking to be maintained in front of small businesses.

Strategies

1) Lacks elongated, landscape medians adjacent to light rail tracks, save right-of-way for other uses.

2) The light rail tracks share a lane with auto traffic on part of the line.

3) The design of the stations saves right-of-way by not having rear entrances.
